Lunchtimes in Lockdown

Enjoy the fourth in University Music's series of virtual lunchtime concerts.

There has never been a time when poets, writers, artists and composers were not inspired by night. This sequence of music and text celebrates the legacy of that fascination, exploring creative responses to the subject through poetry and music.

‘Night’ — as theme, imagery and metaphor — has manifold symbolic associations, often expressed through the contrast between day and night, light and darkness, the beauty and majesty of the skies and heavens, the bewitching, magical mystery of night, the soothing glow of moon and star, the terrors of darkness and the eternal night of death. These conceptions are, in turn, bound together by notions of the divine, the inexorable progress of time and the infinite cycle of existence.
